A Potted History & Information For Velez Malaga/Torre Del Mar

Velez Malaga, the capital of the Axarquía region and a busy market town with an interesting old quarter, ancient churches, monasteries and a substantial fortress but with virtually no tourism, is only ½ hour form Malaga airport. The coast at Torre del Mar or Caleta de Velez is only 10 five minutes drive away.

Less than one hours drive takes you into the old part of Malaga with Picasso’s birth house and the Picasso museum, the beautifully restored Alcazaba, the Cathedral with its lone tower and the Castillo Gibralfaro or alternatively to Alhama de Granada. An additional half an hour will take you to Cordoba or into the Sierra Nevada. It takes only a little longer to reach Antequera with the stunning rock formations of the Torcal.
The town itself lies in the wide valley of the River Velez from where its main resources are found. These are agricultural products of vines, olives, sugar cane and vegetable and salad crops. Good quality olive oils and wine are produced here. There are also many garden nurseries growing and selling a wide range of plants, trees and seeds.

Sightseeing includes, Fortaleza - built in the 13th century, the castle stands on top of a hill in the centre of Arrabal de San Sebastián, the oldest district of the town. The 16 metre high tower, built to guard the town, still stands in good repair as a symbol of the Moorish civilization of Velez-Malaga.

For the children and young at heart there is no better way to spend a day than at the water park found opposite the El Ingenio shopping mall. Which is all accessible via the new tram line.
